I love a play on words.
There are differing views about niches when starting a writing career. Some think you should pick a niche right away and become an expert in that area, and others think doing so puts restrictions on growing as a writer and limits job opportunities.
I can see the benefits of both ideologies.
I aim to be a kick-ass copywriter but I have not yet figured out my niche. In the meantime, I have been doing more content writing and I have made the decision to niche into 2 categories for the time being.
And, those categories are...
Drumroll, Please!
Animals and Mental Health.
Animals are a given for the simple fact that I adore & respect them. It is a broad category, and I may end up with a sub-niche down the line. For now, I want to see which direction it takes me. If you are interested, I have written two pieces (so far) about my dog on my Medium page.(medium.com/@kirstencopy) That's him. ♥
The topic of mental health finally clicked for me when I started to reflect on my education. I have a BA in Sociology, and while that focuses on social issues, I also took psychology courses. I minored in Multicultural and Gender Studies with an emphasis on Women's Issues, and many courses touched upon mental health as it paralleled societal difficulties.
I also have a Masters degree in Human Services with an emphasis on Counseling. So, I have background knowledge on mental health and how it impacts people in our society.
The most significant reason I gravitated toward the mental health realm is from my personal experience with anxiety and panic. It impacted my life for many years, and I want to share first-hand knowledge with those who may benefit. Finding other relatable persons was critical on my journey, so I want to provide support, understanding, and empathy for those who suffer from anxiety and panic.
And, that's a wrap for now. I am excited to have a direction with my content writing and I'll be thrilled once I have narrowed down my copywriting as well.
Cheers~
